A few months back, Dewald asked me to join him on a ‘working trip’ to measure a mall in Leruhtsi for renovations, it would be the week after we attended Oppikoppi. We stayed over in Rustenburg the night before and left early Monday morning. Just before sunrise, we hit a stray donkey just outside Mafikeng. We thought it is the end of the road for us…
However, it was just the beginning. Little did I know that Dewald carefully planned this day to the detail, and had to postpone the proposal by 24hrs after the accident! We had problems with our rental car and exchanged it in Kathu. With our 3rd car in 24hrs, the road ahead was still a mystery to me.
Later that day, we sat watching the most precious sunset from the Naries lookout point just outside Springbok. I thought it silly when we left to play ‘toktokkie’ at the Naries Namakwa Mountain Retreat. Being such an emotional day, I couldn’t believe my eyes, when Dewald knocked and opened a door.
After a feast beneath a starlit sky, I opened a pretty white box, carefully cracked a fortune cookie and read the content: ‘Will you marry me?’.
While declaring that I would be delighted to become his wife, I totally forgot about the ring, which was sitting in his sweaty hands for the past 10min; the most beautiful ring I’ve seen in my life fit my finger perfectly. I just couldn’t wait to hear the entire proposal planning
story: ‘I want to hear everything …’
