The day I will never forget fell on a Saturday… 09/10/10… My fiance suggested during the week that we have some “time out” on the weekend as our lives had been so crazy – great idea!!! Saturday morning we headed off for the shops, got some snacks, some drinks and made our way to the small boat harbour to put the boat in the water… That’s when things started going wrong for Marc (who when I look back now was EXTREMELY calm… good man to be marrying!!). The boat battery was dead, we couldn’t get it started at all… eventually we were taking batteries out the car to put in the boat and try and jump start it in the car then put it back – deary me! Just as I think he was about to give up hope the boat miraculously started!!! Got it off the slipway and off we headed on the Knysna Lagoon – our beautiful local waters!
Now on the Friday before, Marc’s father had asked if he wanted to play golf on Saturday – to which he replied “no thanks”… I should have been suspicious then that a proposal was on the cards.
So I go and book a hair appointment for Saturday – mid boat trip – but I now realise this all worked in Marc’s favour…
So heading out on the water I think its time to take some pics of the stunning day and being on the boat – pull the camera out and the battery goes dead… Marc’s face just dropped!!! I calmed him down by telling him “There isn’t much we need photos of, we go out on the lagoon all the time” – poor guy was shattered inside!!
At about 11am he drops me off at the jetty and unbeknown to me the planning becomes action! He heads off to a small beach on the other side of the lagoon where he will take me when he fetches me from the hairdresser (luckily I had good hair!!!)… Parks the boat, gets out, gets the champagne and glasses set out under a canopy of trees and writes “Will you marry me?” in a heart in the sand. He decides that leaving the ring there is way too risky and keeps it in his pocket!!
So he comes to fetch me – we head out to Belvidere Beach, moor the boat, take out our snacks and drinks, lay the towels and just eventually start chilling.
About 20 mins into us lying there, Marc tells me to get the champagne out the cooler box (we always have a bottle with us!). I go get it (finding it strange that I should be pouring drinks!!) and find nothing in the cooler box… I turn to him and he has a little smile on his face and tells me to look at my feet in the sand… there are arrows – much confusion for me???!!!!! As far as I am concerned we have just got here for the first time and why or when had someone been here to draw arrows ?!
I look at the first arrow and see another one close by… I look a little further and there is another one… Marc sees my confusion and tells me to follow the arrows – in my heart this is when I thought “Oh MY SOUL, COULD THIS BE IT?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” as we had been together for almost
6 years already…
I keep following the arrows and get to the “Will you marry me?” in the sand – needless to say I turn around and there he is, on one knee and asks me face to face… I’m done, I start crying and don’t stop for a while – OVER THE MOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All the effort and planning on his part meant a lot to me and all the little speed bumps he had along the way while still staying calm.
He personally designed the ring himself which is AWESOME and turns out he had it in the safe at home for 6 weeks before asking!!! He had to wait to ask my dad who we had only seen in Cape Town the week before, so it was really special!
A day I will never forget for as long as I live!
