Science has found yet another way to ensure that we make less of a negative impact on our environment. This time, the rather bizarre solution is using the hair of the bride and groom to create the bride-to-be’s magnificent engagement diamond. This initiative, started by DNA2Diamonds, involves using the hair as a source of carbon, which is treated and allowed to develop over the course of only 70 days to create a stunning eco-friendly stone.
This means that environmentally aware (or “green”) couples can choose an option that will not require mining. In their more common forms, a one-carat diamond requires that 275 tons of ore be mined. This has major implications in terms of the stability of the land, the natural wealth of any given mined area and the safety of mine workers, who are often taking enormous risks by mining for these valuable nuggets.
The diamonds produced by DNA2Diamonds come in a variety of colours and can range in size from delicate 0.25 carats to an impressive 2 carats. Despite the processes involved in creating these hairy treasures, they are far cheaper than ordinary diamonds too.
