For a new twist on themed weddings, couples need to explore fairly wild and wacky alternatives before deciding on something that suits them, their relationship and the group of guests that will be attending. The guests are important to consider as this day is also their celebration of the love and commitment of the bridal couple. Choosing a theme with which few people participate or feel comfortable will make for awkward photographs and an air of discomfort. Some novel themes include:
- Barbecue – a barbecue need not be as informal as its reputation implies. In fact, a crackling fire set up in an elegant garden with blooms, fairy lights, lanterns, outdoor furniture or rugs on the lawn can be romantic and memorable for young and old alike. The menu can consist of items like Italian breads, prawns, mussels, stuffed butternuts and steaks, all cooked over the red-hot coals of the fire. Accompanied by a range of fresh salads, these tasty treats are guaranteed to impress all palates.
- Recycled goods – there is an incredible range of items that have come from recycled papers, plastics and metals. From the wedding invitation to the décor, these items are sure to spark a few conversations. For the more traditional couple, a recycled dress and suit can mean using your parents’ or grandparents’. For the more daring, creating a dress using patchwork fabrics, or even plastics and papers can be very innovative and memorable.
- Eco friendly – by using products and processes that do not harm the environment (and, perhaps, even work for its benefit), the couple and guests ensure a wedding that makes as little negative impact on the environment as possible. This could include candles that emit a healthful odour, environmentally-friendly fabrics for dresses and suits, conflict-free diamonds, no smoking, invitations on recycled paper (or, better yet, electronic invitations), hosting the reception in an area that will not be damaged by the cars, marquee or dance floor, serving organic foods and giving guests gifts that are biodegradable or made of natural materials.
- Circus – for the ultimate in fun and over-the-top grandness, a circus theme just begs for bright colours, opulent food and unrivalled music. Animals, tricks and a big top marquee will finish the theme off perfectly. In addition, this allows the guests to get really creative with their outfits, while still being able to look formal and chic.
A wedding day is one to be remembered. While nerves and expenses often dampen the enthusiasm of the bridal couple, introducing a theme can create a mood of vibrancy and laughter as both the wedding party and the guests work together to achieve the overall idea.
