Leap Year, a “RomCom” released in South Africa in February 2010, is a fun and quirky film about lost love, unrequited love and the ultimate conquering of true love. Amy Adams, Adam Scott and Matthew Goode play the lead roles, while John Lithgow and Kaitlin Olson do not fail to impress in their supporting characters. Leap Year is about an impatient Anna (Adams) who has waited for her boyfriend of four years, Jeremy (Scott), to propose. In line with an old Irish tradition, she decides to seize the opportunity to propose to him on a Leap Year (the only time it is appropriate for a woman to propose to a man, according to folklore). However, fate seems to step in at every opportunity as she and a charming inn keeper, Declan (Goode), traverse the countryside in a feverish effort to reach her love before the 29th of February is over. The surprises, complications and twists keep audiences guessing until the very last.
While it may not be in the runnings for this year’s biggest blockbuster, this is a light, entertaining film. It is ideal for couples, friends and families to enjoy.
