When planning your honeymoon, the Karoo is not exactly one of the first places that come to mind when thinking “romance and exotic bliss”. Though while this desolate region might be perceived as stark and barren, in reality this is where true love stories are born.
The Karoo is practically littered with tiny little historic towns like Matjiesfontein, Touws River, Laingsburg and Beaufort-West – each rich with tourist attractions and its own story to tell. Oudtshoorn is an entire hub of tourist activity and must see in its own right, surrounded by nature reserves and home to the remarkable Cango Caves.
There’s certainly no shortage in the accommodation department, and each lodge and guesthouse is more quaint, cozy and luxurious than the last. One might even go as far as to say that these honeymoon hot spots work extra hard to compensate for the natural region’s lack of comforts and luxuries, as a stay in the Karoo is always a pleasure.
One thing to certainly remember when planning a wedding holiday in the Karoo is the less than pleasing weather conditions: Freezing cold in winter and scorching hot in summer. On the plus side – while the land may be barren and dry, the region is simply overflowing with things to do and see; from game farms and hot water springs to unchartered hiking trails and museums for the culture lovers.
